Top 5 Easiest Low-Light Houseplants
Not everyone has the time (or truly wants) to care for finicky plants, but that doesn't mean you can't have green in your living space! Let's talk about some of the easiest plants to care for that can survive in any light you give them.
Let me first preface by saying that these plants can SURVIVE in low light, not thrive. Remember that indoor gardening was a made-up construct by humans. We are selfish buggers that need some green in our homes (Me being one of them). So most plants thrive in outdoor living situations, but that doesn't mean they don't survive and can thrive in an indoor one.
So let's get into some of my top 5 houseplants that can thrive in low-light and are perfect for those who don't want to spend every hour tending to them.
Cast Iron Plant
The cast iron plant AKA Aspidistra elatior is a nearly indestructible plant, as evidenced by it's common name. It grows in the dark and loves shade, which is perfect for under the stairs or in that corner that just needs some green. This plant is perfect for those who have a "black thumb" and can't seem to keep any plant alive.
Snake Plant
The snake plant AKA Dracaena trifasciata has become a staple in many homes and came to be known as one of the easiest plants to take care of. These plants can survive in basically any light you give them but will grow faster in brighter light.
Snake Plant is a succulent so try not to overwater or you will cause root rot. They really don't need to be watered that much which is what makes them so easy.
They self propagate meaning they shoot out new plant babies all by themselves (so proud) through their rhizomes.
Don't overthink it! Sansevieria will love you if you forget it!
Pothos
Pothos also known as Devils Ivy or by its scientific name Epipremnum aureum is essential in your plant collection. I do not care what anyone else says I love pothos. They are perfect as a hanging plant or on a tabletop. They can climb up your walls if you train them and can create a beautiful showering effect with their trailing vines.
Pothos are expressive plants, meaning they notify you when they need to be watered. Their leaves will start to droop and then you give them some good H2O nectar (perfect for those who forget to water). They also can survive in basically any light you give them. This makes the pothos one of the BEST plants for beginners and those who might have a "black thumb".
ZZ Plant
The ZZ plant or Zanzibar gem is drought tolerant, accepts low light, and tolerates neglect. I mean you can put this houseplant in a dark cabinet for weeks and this baby will survive. I generally don't know how it's so resilient, but if you are looking for a plant that looks really cool and also can survive low light - this is your plant baby.
I personally have been jonesin' after a ZZ Raven Plant. This plant has neon green baby leaves and as they mature they turn a gothic, black hue. Spooky right??
Money Tree Plant
The money tree plant aka Guiana Chestnut is a popular houseplant for being easy to grow and resistant in almost any light situation. A lot of these trees come with braided trunks that give off a fun and interesting vibe. Originating from China, this plant is thought to bring good luck and fortune to the owner.
There are many tales circled around this plant. One of the most popular is that of a poor farmer that came across this very resilient and hardy plant, he took that as a lesson to be resilient and strong. From the seed of that tree, he grew many more trees, sold them, and became rich. Needless to say, this plant is very hardy and can survive even the most prolific plant killers!
Even if you have killed plants there are some houseplants out there for you. You just need to search a little more and remember to never give up!
I hope this helps when searching for some new plant babies for your living situation!
As always happy planting,
